Indonesia's Halal Deadline: Mandatory Certification Expands on 18 October

2026-10-15 / Compliance

The grace period ends on 18 October

BPJPH, Indonesia's halal product assurance agency, has repeated its warning to businesses: from 18 October 2026, mandatory halal certification takes effect across a wide net — food and beverages, slaughtered products and slaughtering services, cosmetics, chemical and genetically modified products, natural medicines, quasi-drugs and health supplements, and even raw materials, additives and processing aids for food and drink. If you ship to Indonesia, hold your product list up against that scope now.

A new check before the container even loads

The more operational change has been in force since 9 September: imported products must pass a pre-shipment halal compliance verification in the country of loading or origin. Inspectors verify halal documents, packaging and cross-contamination risk on site, then issue an LPPH halal assurance report — valid for a single shipment — that serves as a mandatory customs document. Non-halal products need supporting statements too; "not halal" does not mean "no paperwork."

The bottleneck is time, not fees

The verification means booking inspectors and matching documents to the physical cargo. Any mismatch and the LPPH never gets issued — and without it, the box sits in Jakarta un-cleared. After 18 October, listed products without certification effectively lose their right to be sold at all, leaving demurrage and re-export risk squarely with the shipper.

Two things to do this week

Ask your Indonesian importer directly: is my product on the mandatory list, and has the certificate been applied for? If the answer is no, start now — BPJPH certification is not measured in days. For cargo already moving, lock the pre-shipment inspection date with your forwarder; don't leave the LPPH to the day before loading.
